ABOUT IT

Connected by Safety: Educational program about early warning and active citizenship for children in Latin America between 8 and 11 years old. It was launched in 2012, sponsored by:

STRATEGIC PARTNERS

  • Public and private schools in Latin America.
  • Security forces in Latin America

VISION

Be the educational program to teach about active citizenship and early warning to all children in Latin America, providing them with tools and sponsoring them to build more safe, inclusive, and responsible cities.

MISSION

  • Offer pedagogical experiences that allow all participants (school communities, security agents and volunteers) resignify their concepts of security, citizenship and security forces.
  • Generate a new connection between security agents and citizens.
  • Collaborate with the formation of responsible and committed citizens.

OBJECTIVES

We want children to:
  • Recognize different risk situations and the different organizations that exist for citizen protection..
  • Learn correct habits regarding the use of communication and its implications in risk and early warning situations.
  • Remember the emergency telephone numbers of the different agencies.
  • Recognize their role as small citizens, within the democratic construction of citizenship.

HOW WE CARRY IT OUT: THE WORKSHOP

In Connected by Safety we believe that everyone can make an alert in time, we just must be alert, know who to call and make sure that our communication works.
A call in time can save more than one life.
Instilling a culture of safety and early warning from childhood helps to build a safer society.
For this, we design educational game workshops where we work on:

  • identification of risk situations,
  • prevention and reaction strategies,
  • communication tools to ask for help,
  • identification of security agencies that act in each risk situation.

Children learn how and with whom to communicate and have the opportunity to meet representatives of the different civil protection organizations and security and emergency agencies.

METHODOLOGY

Through games we promote the development of children’s cognitive and creative abilities.
Through the playful experience in collaboration with representatives of security agencies that join us in the workshop, we promote exploration and invention as transferable skills to other social instances.

WORKSHOPS

Some of the concepts that are worked on during the activity in the classrooms:

  • Differences between agencies and their functions.
  • Different situations of risk, urgency, and emergency (natural disasters, fires, cases of violence, violated rights, car accidents, discrimination, mistreatment, robberies, kidnappings, crashes, accidents in the streets, among others).
  • Tips for safe communication in these situations.

  Volunteer

Our volunteer program consists of collaborators from each country participating in workshops, sharing their specific knowledge about effective communication. In these workshops, a virtuous circle is generated, where all participants – girls, boys, teachers, security agents and volunteers – interact through games, while teaching and learning at the same time. This generates meaningful bonds between them and also between the organizations they represent.

VOLUNTEER

““We are with Connected by Safety. Truth is, it is a wonderful experience, the kids love the games. I was surprised that they already know so much, and there are other things that we helped them learn. It is a wonderful experience. I love participating in this activity because we are giving back to society everything we have.”

Gabriela – Volunteer of Motorola Solutions Argentina

VOLUNTEER

¨I would like to tell a little bit about my experience as a volunteer for Connected by Safety. It was a very interesting, enjoyable, and important experience to establish a bond between children and public safety forces teaching them how to act and who to turn for help in emergency situations. Thank you very much.”

Danilo – Volunteer of Motorola Solutions Brasil

VOLUNTEER

“I think it is a really entertaining experience because, first, we show children security figures so they know how important communication is for people’s safety, so thank you very much for inviting us to participate.”

Cristian – Volunteer from Motorola Solutions Chile

VOLUNTEER

“I had a lot of fun in today’s workshop with the children: I hope this activity can be repeated in many more schools and for many years to come because it is really valuable for children to know about emergency entities that support us.”

Johana – Volunteer of Motorola Solutions Colombia
